Representation

 ⋆˙⟡ The People ✶⋆.˚

Welcome back to another blog, Loungers!

Today, I will be discussing the representation of our project:

Stereotypes

I would say the representation of our film is fair as there is some truth to the roles as these types of cases do happen in real life. This is why internet safety and stranger danger are such a BIG deal now as it is based on these incidents. When it comes to the topic of stereotypes, I would say our film IS as we do kind of play into the naive teenage girl where she acts like a dumb teenager and the damsel in distress stereotype. Furthermore, both of our antagonists are male which is also stereotypical as it is a common trope for a guy to kidnap a girl rather than the other way around. Something that breaks the mold is that the kidnappers are not older adult men but rather the same age as the kidnapees. Lastly, I argue that the character of Daniella is NOT as stereotypical as the rest of the film as she does not play into the tropes mentioned above.

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Representation

We are kind of challenging representation with our film as it is uncommon for an Asian to star in these types of films as most Asian parents would never let their children go out at night alone to hang out with people they have never met before. In addition, Asians are NOT usually seen as the reckless adventuring type that Ivy is portrayed as in the film opener. Thus, even though our project is quite stereotypical, we do challenge it a little bit with our main character. Although I do wish our project was less stereotypical, I am NOT sure how adding more people into the story would fit into the plot unless they were just cameos. Moreover, I do not feel the need to make any changes to our current characters as I am perfectly happy with what we have right now.

Thanks for reading, and I just KNOW you will enjoy the next one!

Inspiration

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ Inspo ‧₊˚✩彡

Hello Loungers! I hope you are excited about another NEW blog!

Today, I will be talking about what inspired me to come up with the plot:

 The Start

While I am not an avid horror fan, I have some friends who LOVE to watch horror, so unfortunately, I get dragged into watching them as well. The main inspiration for the plot of this project was the movie "Megan is Missing" by Director Michael Goi. After saying that, I am sure your minds will immediately recognize the similarities between the plots. Both feature a teenage girl who meets up with strangers they talk to online and gets kidnapped while her friend is left to pick up the pieces left behind. However, that is where the similarities end as the plot for the movie is far darker than what we wanted to do for a school project plus we do NOT have the same freedoms as them to do that kind of plot.

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Building Upon

Remember when I said Yiqi also helped me with coming up with the plot? While the initial idea was mine, she helped expand upon it adding ideas such as meeting up through an online game rather than how it was in the movie, having multiple antagonists/kidnappers, etc. Another movie that inspired this plot was "The Black Phone" by Director Scott Derrickson (I also did a title sequence analysis for it. Check out that blog if you have not seen it already) but to a lesser extent as this one is set in the 70s. This is obviously another kidnapping movie, and I liked the ending of this one more, so if I ever had to come up with an ending to the story it would be similar to this one. Of course, we are only doing an opener, so there is no need for one. Overall, these two are the main movies that inspired me to create this plot for the opener as they have had a HUGE impact on me, and I wanted to share that with the world.

I hope you enjoyed reading today's blog, and stay updated on any future ones!

Updated Story Board

 ⋆˙⟡ New Story Board ✶⋆.˚

Welcome to another post on this lovely blog!

Today, I will be updating our story board to match what we have for our project so far: (UPDATE PICS)

Story Board

Thomson

Davina

Yiqi

Rafael

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Explanation

It has been a while since we talked about the story board, so we decided to revisit it and update it based on what we have now (this might NOT be the last update). So you may be wondering why we decided to change things, well I mentioned in the "Unexpected Challenges" blog that we made adjustments to the script and storyline in order to suit what we could actually do while filming. I am now going to explain those changes as we did not know at the time of planning the initial story board how things were going to play out, but now after filming, we do

As you can see from the first frame, we did NOT change anything except for adding more details. However, from the second onwards, there is a drastic change. Not in terms of story but in terms of the framing, scenery, and positioning. These adjustments ARE reflected in the story board, and the reason for the changes is simply while filming we figured it would be better to do it in a living room/sitting room location rather than a bedroom as bedrooms are rather personal and harder to film due to space issues.

Furthermore, there are changes in how things play out visually such as in the 5th and 6th frames rather than having a separate shot for Ivy texting and then a close-up of what is happening plus a split frame of the reactions. We chose to replace it with a split frame of the over-the-shoulder shot and the phone screen while the reaction would still happen but just through text in the next frame. While the story and the effect of the initial scenes are still there, it was just more convenient for us to film and edit it this way to make sure there is NO confusion about what is going on.

Overall, these are just some of the minor adjustments we have made, but ALL the reasons behind them are practically the same whether it was just easier to film/edit the scene this way or made more sense for events to progress this way. In the end, this reflects our current product far more than the initial story board we had from BEFORE we filmed!

I appreciate that you guys took the time to read my blog, and see you in the next one!

Group Dynamics

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ The Group Experience ‧₊˚✩彡

Hi everyone! We are back again with another blog!

Today, I will be detailing the experience of working with my friends:

 Collaboration

As of right now, collaborating with my friends in a group has been an exciting and fun experience so far! Everyone has been doing their part of the project (I will break that down in the next paragraph), and everything has been going smoothly. Although our project has met some unexpected challenges, as a group we have managed to overcome these adversities and improve ourselves in spite of them. Of course, I knew going into this project what it would be like working with them, but it never hurts to reevaluate what we know to consider any new developments! Overall, I have enjoyed working with them, and if we ever have a project like this again I look forward to choosing them as my partners once again.

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Weights

You might be wondering "Has everyone in the group been pulling their weights?" To that question, I would say "Definitely!" From the ideas and planning to actually working on the project, everyone has done their share of the work. For example, Thomson was the director for most of the filming process, and he also brought some of the equipment we used during filming such as the microphones. Moving on, Yiqi came up with the idea with me, is the protagonist of our project, and used her phone camera as the main filming device. Next, Rafael provided most of the props used during the project, and we also used his house as the filming location of the opener. As for me,  I also came up with the idea with Yiqi, gave rides to everyone, and coordinated most of the things we planned! The rest of the stuff that was not specifically mentioned means that we split up the work among ourselves.

Thanks for reading today's blog, and I hope you stay updated on when I post next.

Project Updates

 ⋆˙⟡ New Information ✶⋆.˚

Hi everyone! This blog will be the first but NOT the last of its kind!

Today, I will be expressing any changes and the current progress of our project:

Progress Check

This is just a progress check to let everyone know where we are in our project! So far we are done with planning everything and have started editing. However, we are NOT done with editing as we want to take our time to make sure everything is up to par with the standards expected at Cambridge. I do not think we need to reshoot anything as there have been no problems with our current footage so far, but we do have extra time just in case. An estimated completion date for our project would be around the beginning of February, and I will update everyone on any other future changes we will make to the project if they arise.

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Changes

As for the changes,  I want to say my group came to a decision on which title sequence to use, and (drum roll please) it is MINE! I am so honored that everyone liked the one I created and will be using it as the main one for the project. The other title sequences were also very suitable for the film opener, but I guess everyone just preferred the massive eerieness of mine. PLUS I know you guys have noticed that we finally settled on a single title which is none other than "Finding Ivy" (I know you saw from the title sequences, but I just wanted to say something about it). Other than that announcement I do not think we have any more changes to announce. Nevertheless, I know you guys have been eagerly waiting for a continuation blog of Day 1 of Shooting, and just for your information, I am in the process of planning that blog! Keep an eye out for that (and no it is NOT the next blog).

Thanks for reading my blog, and never change! Peace out, Loungers!

Lighting

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ The Lighting Experience ‧₊˚✩彡

Welcome back, everyone to another blog post!

Today, I will be talking about our uses of lighting within the project:

 Lighting

For most of the project, we used high-key lighting and natural light in order to match the ordinary ambiance of the beginning of the film. The first half of the film is bright and nothing BAD has happened yet which is why we chose this type of lighting in the first place. Furthermore, most of our lights are ambient or natural light from lights that are already there or sunlight streaming in from the windows nearby as we do not have much lighting equipment on hand (so it kind of is a practical issue but also to suit Ivy's psychology). In the second half of the opener aka the shady parking lot, that is where we switch from high-key lighting to low-key lighting in order to set the mood of something bad is about to happen! Although we tried to make the scene as dark as possible, realistically we cannot control the lights in a public space, so we just had to make do with the street lamps that were already on the scene.

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Possibilities

If we had a bigger budget and more equipment, I would make a similar filming set to the parking lot location but make it way darker in order to further enhance the eerie mood we were trying to create through the low-key lighting. Moreover, the other scenes could have been made more dramatic maybe through 3-point lighting or motivated lighting if we had more equipment on hand. Other than these small tweaks and changes, I am pretty happy with how our footage turned out. I think with some minor adjustments during the editing stage we will be good to go on the lighting aspects of this project! Overall, I am proud of what we were able to create with our limited equipment and skills, and I know the results will be even better!

I love you guys so much for reading, and see you in the next one!

Editing

 ⋆˙⟡ The Editing Experience ✶⋆.˚

Hi Loungers, it is time for the second most important thing! Editing!

Today, I will be talking about our plans for this experience:

Preparation

I know in a previous blog post I said we were going to use Capcut (the software we have been using up until now) to edit our project. However, unfortunately, Capcut is BANNED in the United States for now (a slight problem for us but nothing we cannot get through), so as our backup, we will be using Adobe! Moreover, we all plan to contribute to the editing process as no one is a rookie, but primarily, it will be Yiqi doing the main framework of laying everything out before we all add in additional effects (which will be further expanded upon in the second paragraph). We planned to do a lot of subtle editing such as certain cuts in order to not detract from the realistic feel of the project but rather enhance it, so we will not be using anything fancy like CGI (it is also out of our skill level).  Thus, do not expect too out of the ordinary!

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Editing

This is the part you have all been waiting for, editing! As I mentioned above, I will be expanding upon the effects we have planned for this project! These effects include filters, color grading, and appropriate sound design for each scene as we need everything to be perfect! The filters such as grain or noise will be used to enhance the eerie atmosphere of the antagonists and kidnapping scenes while by color grading I mean altering dark scenes to seem more blue (colder) and ordinary scenes to be more bright (warmer). For the last of the video effects, I am sure you know the sound design we plan on doing (sound effects, background music, etc.) as I detailed in a previous blog post! Moving on to editing transitions, we plan on using a J-cut for the opening scene (another thing for sound!) in order to ease the audience from the establishing shot to the second shot. Next, we will use simple cuts where it is appropriate as not every shot has to be loaded as it will subtract from the ones with actual detail. Then, for any fast-paced or adrenaline-filled scenes such as the antagonists packing, we will use fast jump-cuts in order to capture the intensity and suspense while lastly, we will use fade transitions to create a sense of finality (i.e. when Ivy gets kidnapped transitions to Daniella getting the blackmail).

Once again, thanks for reading my blog, and stay tuned for the next one, Loungers!

Title Sequence

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ Our Title Sequence ‧₊˚✩彡

Hello Loungers! Remember the research we all did back in blog post 15?

Today, I will be using the fruits of everyone's research to each create our own title sequences:

                                                                     My Creation

Okay, so the draft that I made for our film opener is the second one (the one that is ALL red)! The program I used to create mine was Adobe Photoshop as I have previous experience with using it. The first thing I did when I was creating the title sequence was finding a suitable font that I liked, and I ended up settling on this blurry typewriter typeface with a sort of horror vibe to it as it contributes both to the online and horror aspects of the project. This helps the audience kind of surmise what the film is going to be about. As you can see for the color, I went with a simple and direct approach of drowning everything in red, black, and everything in between! Of course, we all know that the red here symbolizes danger (of meeting strangers online), violence (the subsequent kidnapping of Ivy), and desire (Ivy's desire for more companionship and the kidnappers' want to blackmail). Basically, everything that our project covers! Finally, the mouse cursor and the girl in the background on the computer also hint towards the digital aspects of the movie as the colors and shadows encroach on her as if trying to suffocate her with their grip.

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

My Group's Choices

So you may be wondering "But what about the rest of the title sequences?" Fear not, as I am going to talk about it in this paragraph! The first and last designs are Thomson's, and as you can see, even though both are from the same person they are going in completely different directions! The first one taps into the more horror and drama aspects of the project from the eerie handwritten font to the mysterious alleyway in the background while the second one leans into the digital/online feel of the opener from the glitchy text to the anonymous person in the background surrounded by mysterious text. Furthermore, neither of them has the color red as he wanted to be more subtle with the direction that the film opener is going to take. Moving on, the middle/third design is Yiqi's and from the magnifying glass, you can tell she is going for a more detective mystery atmosphere compared to the rest of ours. The bloody text and the color red both contribute to the same dangerous motifs we have all tried to create just in different ways along with another shady alleyway for the background (sort of like the one in our actual project). Last but not least, the fourth image is Rafael's, and he went for a more elegant feel as you can see from the richer red and the font choice! This also coincides with the choice of a different title as one is less obvious about the plot and creates a greater sense of suspense than "Finding Ivy." The background he chose is similar to mine with the main purpose of showing more online aspects of the film! Lastly, you may be wondering which one we chose, but we have not made that decision yet! We are still debating on which one we like the most, and I will update you guys on it once we have chosen.

Keep an eye out for that announcement, and see you ALL in the next post!

Sound

 ⋆˙⟡ The Listening Experience ✶⋆.˚

Welcome back, everyone! Let us get started immediately with today's topic!

Today, I will be detailing our plans for the sound design of our project:

Editing

For our project, everyone will be taking turns editing, and this includes the sound. We have not started editing yet, so I will just be talking about our plans for editing sound for the opener. First off, our editing software will be Capcut which is what we all have been using to edit previous videos, making everyone quite familiar with its easy-to-use interface. Furthermore, since we will ALL be working on the sound together, it is more logical to use the same application to edit our project in order to prevent any mishaps or miscommunication. Anyways, we will be splitting up the project into four parts for all of us to work on equally. This is just our plan for now, so do not be surprised at any changes we will make when we actually get into the thick of it!

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Sound

Moving on to sound considerations, in the beginning, we will probably use melodic sound in order to show the viewer that nothing is wrong in the beginning with some sound effects of the trees swaying and the birds chirping. Furthermore, we will try to keep the non-diegetic sound to a minimum in order to preserve the realistic atmosphere and keep the audience unaware of what is to come! This will be used later on to create a stark contrast with the scenes that have discordant sounds that can be used to create an eerie feeling mixed with ambient sounds of movement which all adds to the suspenseful atmosphere during the parking lot scenes. Lastly, in the ending scene right before the film cuts off and Ivy is taken I think it will be fun to cut ALL sound from the opener in order to create a feeling of finality and drama. Thus, this will hook the audience in and make them wonder what happens next which is the purpose of a film opener!

Thank you, everyone, for reading my blog, and look forward to my next one! Peace out, Loungers!

Day 1 of Shooting

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ Filming DAY ‧₊˚✩彡

I know you guys have been looking forward to this!

Today, I will be FINALLY detailing what we did on DAY 1 of filming:

                                                                      Our Progress

From what you can see above, I put some photos that we took on filming day. Honestly, I cannot believe we are already on filming as we have been planning for SO LONG that the fact that we are actually doing this is just unreal for me! Okay so moving on, we planned to split filming into TWO days by scene (one day for house scenes and one day for the shady parking lot/meeting area). If you are wondering how everything went, it went SUPER WELL, and by that I mean that everything went according to the plan we wrote out on a shared document. Of course, there were some difficulties that I mentioned in my last blog post, but there were not any major setbacks!

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Remaining Schedule

For our remaining scenes (the shady parking lot), we plan to leave that for another day as mentioned in the paragraph above as we spent too much time filming the house scenes that doing the parking lot scenes on the same day was just too tiring for us (plus we had the issue of transportation between locations), so it was just more practical to do it on another day. As for how our current footage turned out, I think BOTH the sound and video quality are up to the expectations of Cambridge, so we will not need to reshoot anything. Although some of the audio in some of the footage has some uncontrollable noise in it (we tried getting rid of it but could not figure out how to fix the problem), I think we will just have to edit it out if it becomes a problem during editing. Also, the thing about reshoots is that the reason we took so much time filming the first part is that we basically reshot EVERY scene until we were perfectly satisfied with it. Thus, I do not think we will need to redo any scene from the house.

Before I knew it we were already filming, I do NOT want to even begin to fathom about the end of this project coming to an end soon...

Unexpected Challenges

 ⋆˙⟡ Challenges We Faced ✶⋆.˚

Thanks for dropping by my blog, and I hope you enjoy today's topic!

Today, I will be opening up about some difficulties and the results of them:

Story

I know I talked about the initial story we planned in previous blogs. However, we had to cut stuff out in order for the events to flow smoothly and NOT spoil what the actual film is about! The film opener is just supposed to introduce the audience to the story, but not flesh out the whole thing (we just wrote a whole story as it is easier for us to know what everything is about and THEN cut parts out to keep the suspense in the project). For example, the plot twist we had planned unfortunately had to be scrapped for the opener as it would have spoiled too much of the ACTUAL movie. Therefore, if you notice any changes moving on or in the final product make sure to keep in mind that before we were just brainstorming, and NOTHING was finalized until we actually started filming.

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Practicality

Moreover, some ideas that we had were discarded due to practical reasons as we had several limitations in terms of time, props, and availability. Firstly, when actually filming we had to consider, the maximum time limit allotted to us by Cambridge as we could not have made the project too long and over the time limit. Another consideration in regard to time is how long it took to film every scene and the due date! In more detail, for each scene, we had to do MULTIPLE takes as getting it right on the first take was virtually impossible for us. Plus with a deadline to meet and the time it takes to edit we just could not do every idea we had considered in the mood board. Next, since we had 0 budget, ALL the props that we used were already stuff we had on hand, and anything we did not have we just had to improvise and substitute it with an alternative. Lastly, by availability, I mean finding filming days where everyone is free and places to film (especially for the house scenes as we would not want to intrude uninvited)! We were lucky enough that we had enough breaks from school and all of our schedules matched up in order to film at someone's house and to film in a slightly shady area at night.

Once again, I cannot thank you guys enough for reading my blogs and supporting us through our project, look out for my next blog as it will be out very soon!

Supporting Characters

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ The Other Characters ‧₊˚✩彡

Welcome back to the Lounge! We are back with another post this time about our side characters.

Today, I will be analyzing the rest of our characters:

                                                                           Daniella

Ivy's best friend, Daniella, is a 5-foot-3 Asian girl with black and purple hair. Like Ivy, she wears glasses, but her frames are more wirey and blue. As previously stated, Daniella's costuming represents her more independent nature as she is not as accepting of Kevin and Stuart as Ivy and treats them with skepticism rather than excitement when they suggest meeting up. This is shown through her main color purple as it is a BOLD color that signifies standing out from the crowd, foreshadowing how even though she is Ivy's best friend she does NOT just go along with all of her whims. Props associated with her can be her phone as she uses it in most scenes to interact with the others as seen when she joins the game on the phone, texts the others through her phone, and calls the authorities with it. Furthermore, she is a much more introverted person illustrated by her less-than warm reception to the two strangers. Her main motive is just to look out for her more reckless friend and to dissuade Ivy from making horrible choices (does not work out in the end). Lastly, her mental state throughout all these scenes is just calm as all the actions she does are thought through, making her psychological state much more stable and rational than Ivy's.

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

The Antagonists (Stuart and Kevin)

Moving on to the antagonists, Kevin and Stuart's main motives are just to lure someone out so they can kidnap and extort them. Thus, their psychological states are far MORE disturbed and abnormal compared to the average person as NO normal person would be willing to do this. They act friendly and extroverted with Ivy in order to bait her and the organization of her kidnapping shows that they are mentally stable and capable of rationality as the amount of thought put into it could not just have been an impulsive whim. Moreover, their appearances both correlate with their motives as they wear all-black outfits at night to blend in and move stealthily while also symbolizing their evil intentions. In terms of physical features, both of them are teenage males with short hair, but Kevin is Asian while Stuart is Black. The prop that is associated with them is the backpack they use for the kidnapping as that best represents their motives and characterization as it is filled with all the objects they would need to enact their plans.

I hope you guys LOVE these characters as much as I do, and see you next time for my next post!

Color in our Project

 ⋆˙⟡ Color Meanings ✶⋆.˚

It is great to see everyone again as I am back with another blog!

Today, I will be detailing the coloring we chose for throughout the opener

Costuming

Since I already explained our choices for costuming in a previous blog (GO check that one as WELL after this), this explanation will not be as in-depth as the one before. Three out of four characters in our project wear black, alluding to the color's importance in the story as it best represents our project's dark and dramatic nature. Both of the antagonists wear black as they have evil intentions even if the audience barely ever sees them with what little glimpses they have of these "mysterious and sinister" figures must have the utmost thought put into them! Meanwhile, Ivy wears black for most of the film to foreshadow the terrible fate she faces as black also has ominous meanings. The purple in Daniella's outfit symbolizes her independent and bold nature as she does NOT care to meet up with online strangers and is NOT afraid to speak up about it to Ivy when she suspects something is wrong.

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─

Filters and Background

For the project, we intend to have some sort of blue or black/dark filter over the darker scenes in the film to make the atmosphere much colder and less friendly. Another filter idea would be to distort or put some type of grain/noise filter over the antagonist scenes as it would cause the audience to become MORE alert as they watch the nefarious actions of our villains! Color in the background switches depending on the scene. In light and innocent scenes where the characters do NOT suspect anything is up, the color is bright and vibrant, but as things take a darker turn that is where the filters and the less saturated colors come into play. For example, in the establishing shot, the colors are extremely vibrant in order to create an unsuspecting atmosphere while in the last FEW scenes, ALL the colors are lifeless and washed out signaling that terrible things are happening.

Thanks for reading today, and stay alert for my NEXT post!

Main Character Analysis

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ A Breakdown of Ivy ‧₊˚✩彡

    ˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Welcome to the analysis of OUR protagonist!

Today, I will be explaining the decisions behind our main character:

Physical Characteristics

Ivy (who is played by Yiqi) is an ordinary teenage girl who is 5 feet and 4 inches (around 163 cm) and an Asian who wears black square-frame glasses with dark brown hair that slowly fades to lighter brown. She enjoys more casual and comfy laid-back styles of dressing hence the baggy black tee with graphics on it and oversized jeans. Furthermore, she wears white crewneck socks, chunky white sneakers (in scenes where she is outside), and a matching off-white graphic jacket (ALL of which looks stylish and trendy showing the viewer that she keeps up with what is popular). In addition to her outfit, the props that she is MOST associated with are her iPad and phone as she enjoys playing online games and chatting with people. All of this put together helps give a natural realistic story, making the events of this opener more believable to the audience. Moreover, the unsuspecting atmosphere alludes to something going wrong later on down the line as it is TOO peaceful for things to go well.
